Minimum Qualifications

Salary dependent on qualifications and experience

Acceptable Experience and Education

Doctor of Jurisprudence with at least six (6) years of criminal and civil legal experience; including three (3) years in mid to senior management with attorneys; and independent trial work. Extensive defense litigation experience in employment law and complex civil matters is required. Strong written and oral communication skills are essential.

Equivalent combinations of education, experience, and training that provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities are also acceptable.

Certificates and Licenses Required

A valid driver's license applicable to job responsibilities is required, with an acceptable driving record by the hire date.

Typical Duties

Essential Duties

  • Supervise department staff, including assigning work, training, performance evaluations, and personnel decisions.
  • Motivate, evaluate, and develop staff; provide or coordinate training to address deficiencies.
  • Develop and implement program work plans; meet with management to resolve issues; review work methods.
  • Participate in strategic planning; translate plans into departmental strategies; develop internal policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a competent staff; prepare technical reports, correspondence, and contracts.
  • Present to the Commissioners' Court, civic groups, and the public.
  • Assist attorneys with legal research and casework; monitor service quality.
  • Maintain relationships with court officials, elected officials, and agencies.
  • Perform client representation including legal research, document drafting, and court preparation.
  • Manage case files and database updates; oversee daily unit operations.
  • Monitor legislative activities; suggest proposals.
  • Engage with community organizations; represent the department publicly as needed.
  • Foster a positive work environment; participate in training and mentoring.
  • County Attorney Office-specific: Supervise prosecution of misdemeanors, juvenile delinquency, protective orders, civil civil matters, and legal representation for the County and Hospital District.

Other Important Duties

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Work extended hours and travel as needed.
  • Maintain workplace safety; participate in emergency response as a Disaster Service Worker.

Job Summary

The Division/Unit Chief manages and coordinates legal services, providing complex legal counsel and representation, and supervising staff. This role is a senior supervisory position within the attorney series.

Organizational Relationships

Reports to: Senior Division Chief or First Assistant; directs attorneys and staff; interacts with county officials, agencies, and the public.

Minimum Requirements: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of legal principles, county and government operations, and management techniques. Skills in planning, supervising, legal advocacy, and effective communication. Ability to operate computers, conduct research, and develop reports. Must pass a background check and demonstrate professionalism, confidentiality, and customer service skills.
